Civil War. Handwritten Bounty Tax records: "List of Inroled [enrolled] Men"
Caernarvon Township, PA, Circa 1861. Original manuscript. 8pp ledger sheets
(12" x 7.5") with handwritten entries. Lists more than 200 men by name,
along with the amounts ($20-$60) that they paid. Laid in is a slip (4" x
7.5"): "Men Yet to be enroled in Caernarvon Township," listing 14 men by
name. Very Good. Removed.
The men on this list paid a Civil War bounty tax, which townships collected
in the early 1860s to finance the enrollment bonuses given to those who
volunteered to join the Union Army. Most of the men who paid the bounty tax
were opposed to war on religious grounds: Amish, Mennonites, and others.
Names on this list include: William Styre, John Kurtz, Cyrus Stroman,
Harrison London--Negro, Samuel Tison, John Ammon, Lewis Buckwalter,
Christian Burckhard, Levi Dehaven, John Hertzler, John Hollinger, Joseph
Good, Lehigh Gruber, Isaac Shirk, Solomon Schnader, Martin Sensenich, David
Mast, Philip Kurtz, and many others. Caernarvon Township was at the time
in Lancaster County, now in Berks County, PA. (#033297) $75.00
