last passenger steamboat on the Ohio River, the "Gordon C. Greene."
Cincinnati, Ohio, 1935. Original manuscript. 10pp, typewritten carbon on
white paper, plain brown-paper covers, old ribbon ties. 8.25" x 8.25" Very
Good. Original Wraps.
Contains details of the author's eight-day excursion on the Ohio River in
company of other women of the Pfister, Arnold and Schwald families of
Cincinnati. She describes: meals on the steamboat; other passengers;
entertainments; Huntington, Ohio; a money-diving contest for the
roustabouts; Marietta, Ohio and the McTiger homestead; a nautical salute
while passing the home of Gordon Greene at Newport, Ohio; a shipboard play,
"No Mother To Guide Her"; the wedding of The Taylors of Pittsburgh aboard
the steamboat; a talent show; fire drill; the port of Pittsburgh; &c. Towns
mentioned include: Ironton, Huntington, Pomeroy, Parkersburg, Marietta,
Newport, Rochester, Pittsburgh, Wheeling, Cincinnati, &c. The steamboat
"Gordon C. Greene," operated in 1935 by Captain Jesse P. Hughes, had been
built in 1923 at the Howard Shipyard in Jefferson, Indiana, the last packet
boat built at that Yard and the last to carry passengers on the Ohio River.
