Lawrence, Abbott and others. NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, EXTRA:
Broadside--Thursday, January 12, 1837. Washington DC: 24th Congress, House
of Representatives. First Edition. Broadside, printed on rag paper:
heading in bold type, text in three columns; original folds. 19" x 11.75"
Very Good.
Rep. Lawrence (a Whig, and later the founder of the town of Lawrence,
Massachusetts) here argues against Free Trade, speaks out for American
business & labor, and accurately predicts the Panic of 1837. The comments
of other members of the House Ways & Means Committee are reported as well.
The financial panic of 1837 was caused by unbounded speculation and
executive experiments on finances, under the presidency of Andrew Jackson.
This panic grew out of Jackson's assumption that government was selling
land for state bank notes of questionable value. Martin Van Buren
inherited the mess when he took office in March of 1837, and the financial
panic gave way to a five-year depression, $250.00
