Although the title page states, translated from the English to Italian, and then Spanish, this work was first written & published in two volumes in Italian (1748-1749). It is an imaginary voyage to the land of the monkeys and to the unknown lands of Australia, written in imitation of Swift's GULLIVER'S TRAVELS. Our 1778 edition is the third edition in Spanish. It is the first by the noted Spanish printer Antonio de Sancha, who also printed an edition in 1781. The Spanish editions were expanded to 4 volumes with 2 final volumes of "Supplement" written by the translator Joaquin de Guzman y Manrique. In effect, it is a new work. See Palau 373957 (but our set with all volumes dated 1778). Sabin 79230. Gibson. SIR THOMAS MORE... WITH A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF UTOPIANA #769.
