Purple wrappers printed in black, stitched with black thread, fore-edges of pages untrimmed; bindings square and tight, faintest whiff of toning to the spine, very minor shelf wear.  Very Good. 

FIRST EDITION of this account of the life and accomplishments of John Bidwell (1819-1900), California pioneer and leading figure in the California Gold Rush.  Bidwell made the overland crossing to California in 1841.  He spent some time working for Augustus Sutter and was involved with General Fremont during the transition to American rule in California.  Bidwell was the first to discover gold in Butte County in 1848 and became one of the wealthiest men in California, donating land for a forestry station, a Normal School, and churches in Chico, California.  The text includes "A Short Biographical Sketch of General John Bidwell," an "Address by Judge John C. Gray," a "Eulogy by Hon. A. F. Jones, Read by Carleton Gray, Esq.," an "Address by Jo D. Sproul, District Attorney," and an "Address by Colonel H. T. Batchelder."
