Albert Murray's death yesterday at the age of 97 was overshadowed by the
death today of Elmore Leonard. Offered here is a wonderfully inscribed
copy of his first book.
MURRAY, Albert. THE OMNI-AMERICANS. New York: Outerbridge & Dienstfrey,
(1970). First Edition. Perspectives on Black experience and American
culture. Author's first book, INSCRIBED at length and SIGNED on the
title page in 1990 for---- "I would say that quite a bit has/changed
during the past twenty/years. The costumes have gotten/worse, to be
sure, but the exercise/of political power has gotten better./I'm afraid
tha I can claim no direct/intellectual influence whatsoever,/however I
must say that all of those/mayors, the new governor of Virginia/and the
present chairman of the Democratic/Party are all consistent with
the/OmniAmericans I have always had/in mind." On the facing page Murray
has written the names of 14 cities with mayors that he refers to in his
inscription and has added "among others!" In addition Murray has made
one correction in the text. Fine in a Near Fine dustwrapper with light
rubbing.
Duke Ellington called Murray "the unsquarest man I know." With Wynton
Marsalis, Murray was the co-founder of the program and institution known
as Jazz at Lincoln Center. (#008433) $750.00
