“A Grammar of Colouring applied to Decorative Painting and the Arts by
George Field, revised, enlarged and adapted to the use of the Ornamental
Painter and Designer by Ellis A. Davidson”

By George Field & Ellis A. Davidson.

Published in London; Lockwood & Co. in 1875.

DISCUSSION: George Field [1777-1854] was a manufacturer of pigments and
the author of several books on color, and was the subject of a 1989
exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum. The first edition of his landmark
"Chromatography" was published in 1835, and the book went through a number
of editions and revisions over the years, many radically changed. This
edition, tailored to the needs of ornamental painters, was first published
in 1874, and may well contain more by Davidson than Field. It also
contains material on Egyptian, Greek, Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance
style and coloring.

DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. Xvi + 224 pages, with 38 wood engraved
illustrations in the text and 2 chromolithographed plates; plus 48 pages
listing the publisher's other books. Publisher's green cloth.

CONDITION NOTES: Covers scuffed and soiled, minor internal soil, several
binding cracks and entire binding somewhat tender and loose.

PRICE: $125 -

color samples.
