[Laurence Sterne:] A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy. By Mr. Yorick. London: Printed for J. Good, No. 159, New Bond Street; and E. and S. Harding, No. 102, Pall Mall, MDCCXCII [1792]. Tall 8vo (23 cm) in full period tree calf; [2] + 184 pp.; engraved plates, tissue guards. ESTC T14688.

An early illustrated edition of Sterne's quirky little gem, a semi-factual travel book-cum-novella. Sterne died before he could finish it, which is a shame, of course, but the result is one of the great (unfinished) last lines in English literature. The title-page states "Volume I," but there was no Vol. II published: the work is complete in one volume. Binding shows some rubbing and darkening to the spine, bumping and wear to the corners, boards slightly bowed; toning to the leaves, foxing to the margins of the plates; a few scattered small spots; otherwise sound, firmly bound. First page of text with the ownership signature of "Marianne Campbell, Ardkinglass [Scotland] 1795." Front paste-down with the small handsome booklabel of Carl Albert Lohmann. An attractive copy.
