TITLE: “Yesterday and Today. The Holy Land. Lithographs and Diaries by
David Roberts, R.A.”

By Favbo Bourbon.
Published by Stewart, Tabori & Chang in 1996.

DISCUSSION: David Roberts [1796-1864] was a Scottish painter who began
painting theater backdrops and ended with his works hanging in the Royal
Galleries. Among his most enduring work was a series of paintings of Egypt
and the Holy Land which were made into lithographic prints in the 1840s.
Encouraged to travel abroad by J.M.W. Turner Roberts sailed for Egypt in
1838 and toured Egypt, Nubia, the Sinai, the Holy Land, Jordan and
Lebanon. Returning to England, he worked with lithographer Louis Haghe
from 1842 to 1849 to produce the lavishly illustrated plates for several
books which were sold by subscription and proved to be a huge commercial
success. This beautiful book includes reproductions of Roberts’
lithographs and diaries, along with modern photos of the same locations.
