Modern London; being the History and Present State of the British Metropolis. Illustrated with Numerous Copper Plates. London: Printed for Richard Phillips, 1804. FIRST EDITION. Bound in full crimson straight-grained morocco tooled in gilt; 571 + [5] pp.; with folding map of London, 21 black&white engraved views (complete) and 23 (of 31) hand-colored plates of London trades.

Binding with modest wear to the extremities and a few small stains; browning and scattered spots to the text leaves, a few (5-6) leaves working loose with some wear to the fore-edges; lacking the frontispiece; foxing to the black& white engravings with occasional damp-stains to the margins; lighter scattered spotting to the colored plates; one colored plate with a tear to the margin, not affecting the image; folding map with a closed tear and missing the fore-edge section. An imperfect but still desirable copy of this monumental and lavishly illustrated survey of London. Fortunately, the twenty-three charming, elegantly colored plates representing "the Itinerant Traders of London in their Ordinary Costume; with Notices of the Remarkable Places Given in the Background" are in quite nice shape, with only minimal toning and spotting.
