Leslie, Charles Robert (1794-1859). AUTOBIOGRAPICAL RECOLLECTIONS....
Edited, with a prefatory essay on Leslie as an artist, and selections from
his correspondence, by Tom Taylor [with handwritten letter]. In Two
Volumes. London: John Murray, 1860. First Edition. Two volumes. pp:
lxxxviii, 255; engraved portrait + 325, including a chronology of the
principal pictures painted by Leslie. Engraved bookplates of Horatio Noble
Pym in both volumes, with a newspaper review of his book, A Tour Round My
Bookshelves, tipped to the front endpaper of Volume I. Bound in full calf,
gilt spine decorations and cover rules, marbled endpapers and edges. 7.5" x
4.75" Near Fine. Full Calf.
Tipped into Volume I is a four-page, autograph letter, in part: "Mr. Tom
Taylor presents his compliments to the Rev'd J. Sheepshanks...the eminent
connoisseur & collector...." Taylor states that he is engaged in a life of
Sir Joshua Reynolds, to be published by Mr. Murray. He hopes that he may be
able to inspect the pictures in the library of the late Mr. Sheepshanks
"for the purpose of identifying as far as possible...." Several mentions of
Horace Walpole, &c., &c. Four pages, 7" x 4.5" //  Leslie was born in
London to American parents who came back to this country with him in 1799
and settled in Philadelphia. By 1811, he had returned to London to study at
the Royal Academy, earning two silver medals, etc. In 1833, he came back
again to teach drawing at the US Military Academy, West Point. Disenchanted
after six months, he returned to England. This autobiography with letters
contains interesting recollections of friends and colleagues here and
abroad.    $90.00
