Nicolson, Harold (1886-1968). GROUP OF EIGHT (8) TYPEWRITTEN LETTERS &
NOTES, SIGNED: On his Piccadilly letterhead, 1955-1963, all addressed to
historian John Lukacs. . Original manuscripts. Five letters, one
single-spaced and the rest double-spaced, and three double-spaced notes.
All signed in full, although the "Nicolson" sometimes trails off after the
letter "l". Very Good.
Nicolson, a British author and diplomat, was married to Vita
Sackville-West. His 3-volume diary is a valuable source of information on
the World War II era as well as before and after. In these letters to John
Lukacs, he discusses histories written by both men, the changing role of
America in the world, Lukacs's belief that American intellectuals "have
become so academic as to be almost German," that Nicolson puts "too much
confidence in [their] numerical or political influence," Anthony Eden's
"dishonorable and disastrous enterprise" [the Suez crisis] and England's
role in it, etc. $600.00
