Five works bound together, most relating to the Church in South Africa and the Gray-Colenso controversy, one of which is inscribed by Gray, the first Anglican Bishop of CapeTown…

Arthur Penrhyn Stanley: The South African Controversy in its Relation to the Church of England. A Speech Delivered in the Lower House on the Convocation of the province of Canterbury, June 29, 1866. Oxford & London: James Parker and Co., 1867. [BOUND WITH:] [Robert Gray, Bishop of Cape Town:]: A Statement Relating to Facts which have been Misunderstood, and to Questions which have been Raised, in Connexion with the Consecration, Trial, and Excommunication of the Right Rev. Dr. Colenso. London: Rivingtons, 1867. Second edition. INSCRIBED on the title-page: "To the Revd. Hugh Pearson with the kind regards of the Bishop of Cape Town. Cuddesden [i.e. Cuddesdon] Jany 15th 1868." [BOUND WITH:] Correspondence of the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury, the Lord Archbishop of York, the Lord Bishop of London, with the Bishop of Capetown, Concerning the Appointment of an Orthodox Bishop to Natal. London: Rivingtons, 1869. [BOUND WITH:] Conference of the Anglican Communion, Holden at Lambeth Palace, September 24-27, 1867. London: Rivingtons, 1867. [BOUND WITH:] The Encyclical Letter of the Lambeth Conference, 1867. Glasgow: James Alison, 1868.

Five pamphlets, extracted as a unit from a larger volume with remnants of the earlier binding on the spine; ink numeral to the title-pages; light spotting and wear to the first title-page, bumping to the bottom corner of the first several leaves; otherwise quite clean and sound, securely bound. A penciled note on the front flyleaf suggests: "Probably collected by Rev. Hugh Pearson (1817-82) canon of Windsor."
