Maine and Prohibition. HANDWRITTEN AFFIDAVITS OF EIGHT (8) MEN RE WHERE AND
FROM WHOM THEY PURCHASED ILLEGAL SPIRITS IN MID-19TH-CENTURY MAINE.
Original manuscript. 8-1/2pp, sepia ink in a clear, uniform hand. Each
affidavit begins with the person testifying, names the saloon keeper, and
details when and how intoxicating liquors were available. Each paragraph is
captioned by case (e.g., State v. Charles H. Balle). Prohibitionists were
powerful in Maine at the time, and trading in liquor was highly illegal.

Maine was the first state to ban the manufacture and sale of liquor except
for medicinal or industrial purposes. The so-called "Maine Law," enacted in
1851, remained in effect, in one form or another, until National
Prohibition was repealed in 1934.   $200.00
