ELEMENTS OF CHESS. Boston: W. Pelham, 1805. First Edition. Bound in
modern quarter green goatskin leather; folding frontispiece of chess
board in expert facsimile. The second book published in America on chess
and the first by an American. To Americanize the game, the author
suggested renaming the pieces: Governor for King; Captain for Knight;
Pioneer for Pawn. Quite scarce especially when uncut as with this copy.
Signature of Stephen North(?) dated 1826 on title page and old ink notes
on three pages; corners of two leaves lacking resulting in partial loss
of text in each case. Moderate aging. New endpapers. Nicely bound.
