Amsterdam: Aux depens de La Compagnie, 1718. Third Edition. Two quarto 
(8" x 9-7/8") volumes bound in one in contemporary calf recently 
rebacked with a new, gilt-lettered and decorated spine. Illustrated with 
89 engraved maps and plates (several showing 2 or more subjects), 
including views, costume, and natural history subjects, as well as more 
than 40 engravings in the text. The first volume describes the Greek 
archipelago and the eastern Mediterranean; the second volume covers 
Asia, the Black Sea, the Caucasus and Persia. The author was one of the 
great botanists of his time, discovering many new plant species during 
his travels in the Levant. Extensive, early ink annotations on the front 
endpapers; first title page with some stains and repairs. Occasional 
spotting, staining but generally quite clean. Binding nicely restored. 
Attractive copy.

The botanist Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708) was commissioned by 
Louis XIV to explore the natural history, geography, and trade in the 
Levant. Accompanied by German botanist Andreas Gundelsheim and artist 
Claude Aubriet, Tournefort traveled the Crete, Greece, Turkey, Georgia, 
and Armenia for two years, from 1700 to 1702. (#016248)        $3,750.00
