Eco, Umberto*. *Opera Aperta* [*Signed*] [The Open Work] Forma E
Interdeterminazione Nelle Poetiche Contemporanee. Milano: Bompini, 1962.
First edition. A Near Fine copy of the first edition, first printing --
1962 Casa Ed. Valentino Bompiani, Milano; Publisher's blindstamp to the
title page as required (expected toning to the pages), in a Near Fine dust
jacket (expected toning, small tear to the top of the front panel), SIGNED
BY UMBERTO ECO on the title page; Umberto Eco’s groundbreaking work on
semiotics which contributed greatly to an important new approach in
contemporary semiotics, usually referred to as "interpretative semiotics".
In this work, Eco argues that a literary text is best when it is a field of
meaning which is internally dynamic and psychologically engaged (i.e. an
"open" text), rather than a mere string of meaning that limits the reader's
potential understanding to a single, unequivocal line (i.e. a "closed
text"). Of the two types, the "open text" is thus the superior and most
rewarding of the two, being active among mind, society, and life. Signed
copies of the first edition are exceptionally difficult to find. A Near
Fine copy of Umberto Eco's important and groundbreaking work, SIGNED BY
UMBERTO ECO . Near Fine. Hardcover. (#00003599) *
