Edward Peyton: The Divine Catastrophe of the Kingly Family of the House of Stuarts: Or, a Short History of the Rise, Reigne, and Ruine thereof. Wherein The most Secret and Chamber Abominations of the two last Kings are discovered, Divine Justice in King Charles his Overthrow vindicated, and the Parliaments Proceedings against him clearly justified. By Sir Edward Peyton, Knight and Baronet, a diligent Observer of Those Times. London: Printed for T. Warner at the Black-Boy in Pater-noster-Row, MDCCXXXI [1731]. Small 8vo; [4], 68 pp. ESTC T67341.

Peyton's jeremiad against the Stuart kings, first published in 1652 and here reissued as a warning to any waverers and budding Jacobites tempted to heed the seditious siren's call of the Old Pretender lurking across the Channel. The work is a lively catalogue of alleged corruption and misdeeds, as well as court tittle-tattle ("The Queen departed [being dead], the King sold his Affections to Sir George Villiers, whom he would tumble and kiss as a Mistress"). Disbound from a nonce volume with remnant of earlier binding on spine; modest soiling to the first and last page, leaves lightly age-toned, a few small spots and light stains, small ink stamp in the margin of one leaf, one penciled marginal note in an early/contemporary hand ("Why should a married Woman take Physick to promote Abortion?"); first two leaves a little tentatively attached, else securely bound. A nice fresh copy.
