[John Arbuthnot:] A Sermon Preach’d to the People at the Mercat-Cross of Edinburgh, On the Subject of the Union in 1706, while the Act for Uniting the Two Kingdoms was depending before the Parliament there. With a Preface by the Editor, Setting forth the Advantages which have, in Fact, accrued to the Kingdom of Scotland by its Union with England. London: Printed for J. Roberts in Warwick-Lane, MDCCXLV [1745]. First edition thus. Small 8vo pamphlet; 31, [1] pp. ESTC T173716. Disbound from a nonce volume, remnant of old leather binding on the spine; light toning to the leaves, a touch of dust-soiling to the top edges; otherwise clean and crisp, securely bound.

Arbuthnot's sermon in favor of the 1707 Act of Union, reprinted in the year of the second great Jacobite Rising (the 'Forty-Five), with a timely preface discussing the "present Rebellion". "It is hoped," the editor writes, "that the Reprinting of it may be of some Service now, to undeceive those honest Scots who will rather attend to the Still Voice of Reason, than the Noisy Clamours of a giddy Multitude." ESCT locates only one copy in U.S. institutions (UCLA's Clark Library).
