An Essay on the Sinking Fund; Wherein the Nature thereof is fully Explained; And the Right of the Publick to that Fund Asserted and Maintained. The Second Edition, Corrected and much Enlarged. London: Printed for J. Peele, at Locke’s Head, in Amen-Corner, MDCCXXXVII [1737]. Pamphlet, 8vo; [2], 85, [1] pp.; with the half-title. ESTC T96098. Disbound from a nonce volume with remnants of old leather binding on the spine; light dust-soiling to the half-title, top corners gently bumped, a few small stray spots, original/early owner's occasional tidy ink notations in the margins; otherwise very clean and crisp, securely bound. A nice fresh copy.

A lengthy and comprehensive examination of the government's management of public finance, as well as Robert Walpole's scheme for handling the national debt. Curiously, the English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC), in its entry for this pamphlet, lists Alexander Pope as one of the subjects of the work. Without actually reading the whole thing, we have no idea why, but perhaps the lucky winning bidder will find out…
