J. T. Danson: The Landowner in Relation to the State. A Paper read at the Annual Meeting of the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science. London: [Emily Faithfull,] 1864. Pamphlet; 8vo, sewn as issued; 17 pp. Mild dust-soiling and toning to the covers; top edge with a ding and short marginal tear; some light creases.

"In this country all title to land rests upon the law." Thus Danson, a barrister, begins his closely-argued analysis. He examines the extent and nature of land-ownership in England and whether the state should further intervene in the workings of the free market, concluding that, "it would behove us very carefully and even suspiciously" to consider any extension of the power of the state. The pamphlet, printed by the pioneering women's rights advocate and publisher Emily Faithfull, is quite uncommon, the usual catalogues locating only the BL and Bodleian copies.
