Sidney Webb: A Plea for the Taxation of Ground Rents… With a Preface by the Right. Hon. Lord Hobhouse. [London:] United Committee for the Taxation of Ground Rents Values, 1887. Pamphlet, 8vo, stapled as issued; 15, [1] pp. Toning to the edges, light creasing, title-page with the small deaccession stamp of the International Institute of Social History, Amsterdam, on the verso ("Verwijderd Uit Bibl. I.I.S.G.").

An early pamphlet by this pioneer of the modern British socialist and labor movements. Sidney Webb (1859-1947), lawyer, economist and sociologist, went on to co-found the London School of Economics in 1895. An early member of the Fabian Society, he was responsible, along with George Bernard Shaw, Annie Besant, Walter Crane and others, for transforming it into the foremost progressive organization of the Edwardian era. Later still, he served in Ramsay MacDonald's second Labour government from 1929-1931.
