SHERMAN, General William T. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS). New York, 25
Nov. 1890. Two-page letter to author and editor George W. Curtis
granting permission to use his letters for publication in Harper's
"'Easy Chair', only please keep me out of controversy." Sherman also
briefly discusses "the million of human acts accompanying the great wave
of civilization westward" which he attributes "to the ordinary impulses
of men" and not to any divine source. Curtis, editor of HARPER'S WEEKLY
during the Civil War years and one of the most influential American
journalists of any day, also was known for his speeches, one of which
was a tribute to Sumner. Curtis also had the honor of helping Thoreau
build his cabin on Walden Pond. Fine content from one of the major
military figures of the 19th century to one of the central literary
figures. Near Fine. (#007016) $1,000.00
