A. M. Broadley: Napoleon in Caricature 1795-1821. London [and] New York: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1911. FIRST EDITION. Two volumes, thick 8vo, bound in three-quarter crimson morocco, spines adorned with Napoleonic motifs (and a glaring mispelling of the subject's name), top page-edges gilt; 391, 441 pp.; with nearly 250 illustrations, 24 in color.
Exhaustive and well-illustrated, this remains the definitive work on the subject.

Includes examples from Cruikshank, Gillray, Rowlandson, and most of the major British and European visual satirists of the day. The very detailed appendices include alphabetical lists of Napoleonic caricatures from England, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, etc. Front board of vol. I nearly detached; modest wear to the edges and corners, some loss to the leather at the top of one spine; one plate laid in loose, otherwise the contents are sound and very clean, firmly bound. Front paste-downs with the bookplate of Thomas and Helen Jewett Hunt.
