Octavo. Contemporary half leather over pebbled cloth boards, the
spine with raised bands and titled in gilt. Issued as Harper's
Library of Select Novels, No. 182. Original paper wrappers lacking,
bound together with Zaidee: A Romance (anonymous, but by Mrs.
Oliphant) (Boston: Jewett, 1856) and "Moredun", A Tale of the Twelve
Hundred and Ten by Sir Walter Scott (NY & Boston: Fetridge, 1855). .
Published simultaneously with cloth edition. Bound in with [Mrs.
Oliphant] and Walter Scott: Moredun: A Tale of the Twelve Hundred and
Ten (1855). 184 pp (Villette) + 178 pp (Zaidee) + xv + 126 pp
(Moredun). Covers and back a bit rubbed, slight wear to extremities,
inner front hinge reinforced internally with old tape. Printed in
double columns. Pages crisp, lightly age toned, scattered
foxing/spotting. Overall, a very good copy.
Charlotte Bronte's fourth novel, first issued earlier in the same
year in a London edition (Smith, Elder, 1853; 3 Volumes). "After an
unspecified family disaster, the protagonist Lucy Snowe travels from
England to the fictional French-speaking city of Villette to teach at
a girls' school, where she is drawn into adventure and romance." The
first American edition was issued in both cloth and wrappers simultaneously.
