*Trollope, Anthony. The Small House at Allington.* London: Smith, Elder and
Co., 1864. First edition. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first
printing, in the Publisher's original blindstamped green cloth decorated in
gilt; the fifth and penultimate novel in Anthony Trollope's famed series of
Barchester novels, originally serialized in The Cornhill Magazine from
September 1862 through April 1864, this double decker novel itself havign
been published in 1864. The Small House at Allington "...introduces
Trollope's favorite heroine, Lily Dale, and his two most admired
characters, Plantagenet Palliser and his wife Lady Glencora, later the Duke
and Duchess of Omnium. It is generally accepted that the character of
Johnny Eames is representative of the young Trollope." [Gerould]. In Volume
I of this set, the "7" is lacking from page 70, although it is present in
some copies --- which of the two is the earlier state is not known. Also,
the sentence running from p. 32 to p. 33 reads "And he had a younger sister
who loved him dearly, who had no idea that he was a hobbledehoy, being
somewhat of a hobbledehoya herself." In some copies, both words read
"hobbledehoy", but it is unknown which is the earlier state. Perhaps
Trollope was playfully feminizing the word on purpose. This set is still in
the original blindstamped green cloth decorated in gilt and still has the
original brown-grey endpapers, with those comprising the pastedowns being
imprinted with advertisements. The Volumes have been recased and brown book
tape has been applied to the joints for added strength. Within, there is
but a little foxing to the leaves and plates. Sadleir notes that The Small
House at Allington tends to turn up either in beautiful condition or quite
worn. This copy is neither, being in the middle of the two common
conditions cited by Sadleir. Copies in their original cloth appear to be
growing scarcer to the market. A Very Good copy. Very Good. Hardcover.
