TITLE: “Tudor Homes of England with some examples from later periods”

By Samuel Chamberlain & Louis Skidmore.
Published in New York by the Architectural Book Publishing Company in 1929.

DISCUSSION: An oversized, elegant pictorial survey of surviving Tudor
architecture in England. The illustrations feature photographs and
sketches by Chamberlain and measured drawings by Louis Skidmore, who would
eventually become a founder of the famous architectural firm Skidmore,
Owings and Merrill.

The International Fine Print Dealers Association notes that “Samuel
Chamberlain [1895–1975] was an accomplished etcher, lithographer, teacher,
writer and lecturer. At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
Chamberlain taught and lectured on various graphic technique such as
etching, drypoint, and softground etching. Chamberlain created his first
lithograph in 1923 and in the following year he produced his first of many
drypoint engravings. He also authored and illustrated a great number of
architectural books including, “Sketches of Northern Spanish
Architecture”, “Domestic Architecture in Rural France” and “Tudor Homes of
England”. Chamberlain is even credited with introducing gourmet French
dining to the United States with his cookbook, “Clementine in the
Kitchen”. He was a member of the National Academy of Design in New York
City; the Society of Etchers in Brooklyn, NY; the American Academy of Arts
and Sciences; the Chicago Society of Etchers, and many other esteemed
organizations. His awards include an honorable mention at the Paris Salon
in 1925 and a gold medal at the Boston Tercentenary in 1930.”

DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 12.5”x16”, 13 + 239 pages, black & white
illustrations.

CONDITION NOTES: Minor soil, but otherwise clean and nice, with a tight
binding.
