Gordon, Patrick. GEOGRAPHY ANATOMIZ'D: or the Geographical Grammar... The Eleventh Edition, Corrected, and Somewhat Enlarg'd. And a Set of New Maps. By Mr. [John] Senex. London: J. and J. Knapton, et al. 1728. 8vo. (24),416pp. With the half-title and all the 16 folding maps (the world map is double-page, both folding). Both the world map and the map of North America show a large "Isle of California." Cont. paneled calf, with spine label. Two engraved bookplates for "Duncan Frazer of Auchnagarn" (Scotland). A short split at the top of the front hinge, otherwise an unusually fine copy. ?? $1,250.00 (trade discount allowed)
First published in 1693, this very popular world geography went through 24 editions to 1754. Up to the 8th edition (1719) the maps were made by Robert Morden. In 1722 (the 9th edition) a new set of maps by John Senex were engraved. Most editions are quite scarce today. This 1728 edition is recorded in the ESTC with only 3 copies in England and 2 in the U. S. See McLaughlin and Mayo, THE MAPPING OF CALIFORNIA AS AN ISLAND,? #210 (the 1730 edition) with a plate.
