(18),638;(4),726;(4),574pp. Each volume with a copper engraved frontispiece portrait of Montaigne. Cont. calf, worn, soundly rebacked, gilt titling on spines. Vols. I & III are dated 1685, Vol. II is 1686, as published. A frontispiece portrait is called for in all 3 volumes, not just in Vol. I. This is the first edition of the translation by Charles Cotton (1630-1687, the poet and friend of Izaak Walton). It is his last work published in his lifetime. Wing M2479 (reprinted in 1693 and 1700).
