[WEBSTER, Daniel] NESMITH, George W. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) About
Building a Monument to Daniel Webster and Renovating Webster's
Birthplace. Franklin, NH, 14 January 1882. A 3-page letter on 5" x 8"
paper written and SIGNED by Nesmith to S. Hutchins regarding plans to
build a monument in honor of Daniel Webster and renovating his
birthplace. In part: "We have rec'd your favor, inviting our attention
to the propriety of erecting an appropriate monument in honor of the
name and distinguished services of Hon. Danl. Webster. I agree with you,
that any thing, that we can reasonably do to perpetuate his memory,
ought to be freely done now. For this generation owes him a debt of
gratitude, that we can never pay. We would rejoice to contribute our
mite towards placing a fit representation of that massive head and
frame, indicative of that expansive intellect and eloquent expression
hardly ever possessed by any other in this country, in some conspicuous
place in your great and growing city. Skilled artists are sending to you
their prototypes, or models of many of our illustrious dead, but we
assure you the true model of Webster would deservedly attract the gaze
of the loving of our Country and the Institutions while fully
appreciating the value of the arduous services in their support and
defence.... In the mean time, let me tell you that during the past year
I have come into possession of the Farm where Daniel Webster's father
first planted his log cabin + afterwards the little Cottage where he was
born. I found the buildings in a dillapittated [sic] state, and have
already erected a new Barn and have commenced upon the repairs of the
room where he was born." Interestingly, the Landmarks Registry states
that Webster's farm was never altered, but this letter contradicts this.
With an engraving of Webster's residence. File holes at top affecting a
few words, but not the content; light creases from folding. Near Fine.
Nesmith was a New Hampshire Supreme Court Justice and friend of
Webster's. In 1851, he donated ownership of Webster's birthplace to the
Senator, but in 1881, well after Webster's death, he purchased it back.
