Comments:
¶ With 69 full-colour maps (including one
double-page map of the USA), 2 pages of Flags in
colour, plus 31 pages of Appendixes at rear -
Principal Cities of the World; United States
Reclamation Service (with b/w map); Presidents of
the United States (with b/w portraits); The
Panama Canal (with full page b/w map); Principal
Cities of the United States from the 1905 Census
and Latest Official Estimates of Population.
Each state is given a full-page colour map,
including Alaska (which was not even incorporated
as an organized US Territory until 1912).
Notably, there is no map of the Hawaiian Islands
(aside from a tiny depiction at the bottom of an
early map of US Acquisition of Territory which
shows Alaska, Porto Rico, Samoa, Wake, Hawaiian Islands, & the Philippines).
The maps of Canada depict the Maritimes
(including the separate Commonwealth country of
Newfoundland), Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, &
Alberta & Saskatchewan - but no British Columbia
or Northern Territories. There are maps of the
West Indies, the Canal Zone and Cuba. For the
rest of the world we have South America, Africa,
Europe, The British isles, Asia, The Philippine
Islands (they get their own map at near the end!)
and a full-page map of Australia.
A very US-Centric Atlas, reminiscent of a school
textbook type Atlas common to the time, but done
up as a promotional item - The front cover
clearly states "Compliments of the New York
Cordage Co. 83-85 Wall Street". Rare - there is
no copy listed in Worldcat or in any
institutional library in the USA or the rest of
the world; there are no copies listed for sale
anywhere, there are no auction records and there
is nothing in Google on either this atlas or even
the NY Cordage Company at all. The Atlas is quite
lovely, the maps are fresh and vibrant, the paper
is good and it's a very pleasing American period atlas.
$250.00 Cdn, trade discount allowed.
