Prince Hall Masons. CHESAPEAK LODGE, NO. 48, HAVERDEGRASE, MD, JUNE 7,
1929, TO THE WORSHIPFUL MASTER, WARDENS AND BRETHREN: Application for
membership in this African-American Masonic order. Havre de Grace,
Maryland, 1929. Original manuscript. 4pp, printed application, completed by
hand in black ink, by Harry James Mason, born in 1890 at Port Deposit, MD,
with his handwritten answers to 17 questions. Includes two personal
references, signed by the "Vouchers," and the signatures of three members
of the Investigating Committee. Some early wear and soiling. 14" x 8.5"
Good . Printed self-wrappers.
Harry James Mason describes himself as a single, 39-year-old laborer for a
coal & lumber company. Lodge No. 48 still operates as part of the 6th
Masonic District, Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge, Maryland.
