This small archive pertains to the founding of Smith College. "Hubbard
House opened in 1879, and was named in honor of George W. Hubbard, who was
Sophia Smith’s lawyer. It was Hubbard who convinced Sophia Smith to build
the college in Northampton, and to shorten the name from Sophia Smith
College to Smith College. Hubbard was appointed to the original Board of
Trustees from 1871-88, and also served as treasurer of the college during
that time. From 1871-72, he was also the President of Smith Charities. In
1875, he donated the clock in the tower of College Hall. According to
President Seelye, “He was a man of few words, but of clear thought, sound
judgment…A man of rare sagacity and integrity, and loyally devoted to the
College." (Smithipedia website) (#036691) $150.00
