TITLE: “A Frivolous Distinction. Fashion and Needlework in the Works of
Jane Austen”
By Penelope Byrde.
Published by the Bath City Council in 1979.
DISCUSSION: A fascinating study of how the fashions and needlework of
her times were reflected in Jane Austen's books and private
correspondence. The author, whose academic background was in fashion,
not literature, divides Austen's writing into five areas: women's dress,
the making and care of clothes, dress for special occasions, men's
dress, and needlework. Starting down these pages will tug you into a
non-fictional rabbit hole from which you may not want to emerge.
DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 6"x8", 42 pages, color and black & white
illustrations.
CONDITION NOTES: The covers have some light wear and soil. The book
interior has some minor soil, but otherwise is clean and nice, with a
tight binding.
PRICE: $50 -
