[1932]. First Edition, First Printing. First Edition. octavo,

"This book is written to replace the author's earlier "Interpretation
of Radium." It deals fully with radio activity as the manifestation
of spontaneous disintegration of the atom, with isotopes, the
chemically identical varieties of atoms of the same element first
revealed by radio-active changes, and with the general application of
these discoveries and the theoretical conceptions of, quanta and
relativity to the interpretation of the atom. Like the earlier work,
it is intended primarily for the general reader, seeking to
understand the world in which he lives, and as a guide to the
scientific student interested in the relation between the new
discoveries and theories and the older body of knowledge, and in the
synthesis of scientific ideas." - Bernard Quaritch, Catalogue No. 489
[1934].
