John Galt: The Life and Administration of Cardinal Wolsey. London: Printed for T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1812. FIRST EDITION. Large 4to (29 x 23 cm), untrimmed in original publisher's boards, rebacked to style with printed spine label; xx + 268 + ccxxxiii + [1] pp.; engraved portrait frontispiece.

First edition of this biography of Wolsey by an author best known as a novelist, poet, and acquaintance of Lord Byron. The lengthy appendix contains the text of numerous documents and sources from Wolsey's time. John Galt's most lasting works are his humorous Scottish novels, among them The Ayrshire Legatees and Annals of the Parish, and his Life of Lord Byron, published in 1830. Bumping to the corners of the boards; offsetting and a few spots to the title-page and frontispiece; leaves toned with some darkening to the untrimmed edges, occasional spots and foxing.
