BUCKINGHAMSHIRE: A CONTRIBUTION TO THE NATURAL HISTORY OF THE TWO
COUNTIES. Eton/London: Simpkin, Marshall, 1868. First Edition. Small
octavo (5" x 7-1/2") in publisher's gilt-decorated green cloth; xiv,
[ii], 232 pages. Illustrated with 4 original hand-colored albumen
photographs. Published by the author at the tender age of 16, this is
believed to be the first field guide to birds to use photographs for
illustrations. Gernsheim 436; Goldschmidt & Naef: THE TRUTHFUL LENS 96:
"It was impossible at this time to photograph live birds due to the
absence of the telephoto lens and extremely light-sensitive plates that
would permit short exposures. Muybridge [ANIMAL LOCOMOTION, 1887] was
the first to photograph birds in flight."; Zimmer p. 347. Armorial
bookplate of William Bramley Moore and small bookseller's ticket on the
front pastedown with a small binder's ticket at the rear. Minor bubbling
to the cloth which has a small tear at the base of the spine. Near Fine.
