FIRST EDITION, second state, as usual (with the advertisement leaf ending with the words "Thomas Chatterton"). Tall 8vo (22 cm) in later tree calf with gilt-tooled borders, decorations and morocco spine label, later marbled endpapers; xxvii, [1], 307, [1] pp.; engraved frontispiece. ESTC T42675; Alston III.49

With the engraved armorial bookplate of the Earl Cornwallis on the front paste-down.
Binding with just a touch of bumping and wear to the corners and a few light scuff marks; occasional scattered light spotting to the leaves, a bit heavier on the last 2 leaves; some bumping to the page edges; otherwise very clean and crisp, firmly bound. A handsome copy of the work that ignited one of the great literary controversies of the 18th century.
