Greetings,
We offer:
~
Johnson, W[illiam]. Bishop (1858-?). THE SCOURGING OF A RACE, AND OTHER
SERMONS AND ADDRESSES.
Washington, DC: Beresford, Printer, 1904. First printing, Original
cloth, Octavo, viii, 228 pages, Frontispiece photo of author. Near Fine.
Johnson, a minister in Washington, DC, was a leader in the
early politicization of the African American Baptist church. This was a
crucial period as African Americans, seeking organization as way to
combat racist violence and discrimination, looked to the black church.
Johnson was active in the formation and development of the American
Baptist National Convention and the National Baptist Educational
Convention. This volume contains many of his sermons, including his
sermon on "National Perils" delivered at Second Baptist Church in
Washington on October 20, 1889--a day set apart by the American Baptist
National Convention for prayer that Southern outrages might cease. Bound
in brown cloth over boards with spine titled in gilt. Tissue-guarded
frontispiece photograph. Some slight extremity rubs to cloth. Very nice.
