35521Not Attributed
SPANISH-LANGUAGE DOCUMENT1868 CUBA CONTRACT FOR AN INDENTURED CHINESE LABORER RAILROAD EPHEMERA COOLIE HAVANA Not Attributed VG NONE Paper Pages2
Gobierno Politico De La Habana. 1868 This rare antique Spanish-language document, dated July, 1868, is from Cuba, and is a six-month railroad contract for an indentured Chinese laborer. One leaf two pages p[artly printed and partly filled out in autograph. This document has the embossed seal of a Cuban railroad and bears the heading "Gobierno Politico de La Habana." It outlines the duration of the contract, the nature of the work, the hours to be worked per day and the payment. This contract was signed by a witness for the worker and appears to bear the markings of the worker. The stamp of the municipal government of Havana appears on verso. During the mid-19th century, thousands of Chinese both voluntarily and involuntarily emigrated to Spanish colonies in the western hemisphere, where they labored on railroads and sugar plantations as indentured laborers alongside African slaves. Cuban consular agents would recruit workers with the promise of a better life, but often the emigrants would be captured by Chinese pirates and sold as slaves. Although British ports could not ship Chinese coolies to non-British destinations, many ships sailed to Macau where Portuguese-owned prison ships that transported slaves to Cuba. Unlike those of African origin, the Chinese often signed contracts stipulating the terms of their labor -- hours worked per day, wages listed as 0 -- and were free Cuban citizens upon completion of their eight-year term. Eventually, Havana had the largest Chinatown in Latin America. The internationally known artist and protege of Picasso, Wilfredo Lam, was a descendent of a Chinese laborer and an African slave.
