Alaric A. Watts (editor): The Literary Souvenir; or, Cabinet of Poetry and Romance. London: Hurst, Robinson, and Co. (Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green for second vol.), 1826-27. First editions thus. Two volumes, 12mo (14 cm), bound in uniform period full green morocco with gilt-lettered spines, all page edges gilt; xvi, 410, [10] pp.; xxiv, 402, [6] pp.; extra engraved title-pages and frontispieces plus 9-10 additional engraved plates in each volume; publisher's adverts.

Two volumes, the second and third years of this annual collection of poetry, tales and engravings edited by Alaric Watts and published from 1825-1835. Contributors include Watts himself, Mrs. [Felicia] Hemans, Robert Southey, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Washington Irving, Thomas Hood, Mary Howitt, Rev. W. Lisle Bowles (a particular bugbear of Lord Byron's, who here charitably offers a tribute to the dead poet, "Childe Harold's Last Pilgrimage"), James Hogg, John Galt, John Clare, Thomas Campbell, Mary Russell Mitford, Anna Maria Porter, Jane Porter, Barry Cornwall, William Sotheby, Horace Smith, and many others. The plates are engraved after works by such artists as Finden, Romney, Charles Heath, and J.M.W. Turner (two of whose drawings, "Richmond Hill" and "Buckfastleigh Abbey," are published here for the first time). In addition, there are two engraved plate leaves of facsimile signatures (Maria Edgeworth, Washington Irving, Sarah Siddons, Leigh Hunt, etc.).

Bindings with light rubbing, some wear to the extremities with the upper corners exposed; occasional light foxing, usually in the vicinity of the plates; otherwise quite clean and sharp, firmly bound. A charming, attractive pair.
