Greetings,
We offer:
~
Wells, H[erbert]. G[eorge]. (1866-1946). THE WAR OF THE WORLDS.
New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1898. First American edition,
Full cloth, Duodecimo, [x], 291 pages, black & white plates. Near Fine.
Beautiful copy of this landmark science fiction novel. The
first printing in the United States, illustrated by Warwick Goble. The
1938 radio adaptation performed by Orson Welles famously created a panic
when listeners took it for news coverage of an actual Martian invasion.
Bound in green cloth over boards with spine and upper board titled in
gilt, upper board additionally ornamented in black and green. Touch of
browning to spine, faint rubs at extremities. Prior owner bookplate and
pencilled name on front pastedown, additional name pencilled on front
free endpaper. Top edge of textblock has a faint dampstain which has
left a shallow tide mark into the top margin of about a third of the
pages. No rippling and really hardly noticeable. A lovely copy.......
