BATTALION SEABEES (US NAVAL CONSTRUCTION BATTALION) AT WORK IN PAPUA NEW
GUINEA DURING WORLD WAR II. Original photographs. Group of 18 originalé
photographs showing the "can do" men of the 60th Battalion, on and off duty
in New Guinea. Subjects are: Local men lashing together a large, bamboo
structure (six photos); a group of seven indigenous children; the little
Seabees theater in New Guinea (not on back); group of eight Seabees in
uniform (noted on back: Jack Sanders, Findley, John "Red" Anderso, Lipson,
Warney, Shotgun Shelton, John Hill, August Leroy Herman); Seabee fishing in
a stream; Seabee loafing outside a small structure with sign, "Company D
Post Office"; shoreline view; Seabees inspecting ruins of an airplane; &c.
  Black-and-white photographs, 3.75" x 2.75" to 4.5" x 3.25". Very Good.

The 60th US Naval Construction Battalion was organized in 1941 for the
specific purpose of building and defending airstrips in the Southwest
Pacific during World War II. Seabees were recruited from navy personnel
with construction experience and skills. The 60th arrived at Woodlark
Island, Papua New Guinea, in August 1943. In July 1944, 856 officers and
men shipped out to Owi where the Army was in process of building two
airstrips. Shortly after the Seabees arrived, they had built a fully
operational 3,000-foot landing strip, built camps for two bomber squadrons,
the 17th Army field hospital, bomb and gasoline storage areas, roads, a
boat pier, &c. $200.00
