[Thomas Streatfeild; George Cruikshank:] Lympsfield and its Environs… and The Old Oak Chair, a Ballad, with Illustrations by George Cruikshank. Westerham: Printed and Published by Henry George, 1838. FIRST EDITION, large paper copy; tall 8vo (25.5 cm) in early/original roan-backed boards; unpaginated; with 4 woodcut vignettes by Cruikshank and 12 lithographic plates (by another artist) on India paper. Douglas 189; Cohn 778.

Albert M. Cohn's own copy, with the bookplate of the great Cruikshank bibliographer on the front paste-down, along with his penciled note: "Extremely rare. Large paper, proofs on India Paper." Also present is the elaborate bookplate (designed and engraved by E.B. Bird for Tiffany & Co.) of William Hartmann Woodin, industrialist, Secretary of the Treasury under FDR (1933-34), and noted book and coin collector. Woodin was thoughtful enough to tip in his bookplate at the top edge, so that it can be lifted up, revealing Cohn's handwritten note underneath. Tipped onto the leaf opposite is an Autograph Letter Signed (initials) by J. F. Streatfeild, 2 pp., pertaining to the writing and illustrating of the two works in this volume and mentioning "George Cruikshank's four beautiful designs."

Binding with rubbing to the joints, bumping to the corners; front inner joint starting but secure; mild toning to the contents with some darkening to the top edge; foxing/stain to one lithograph plate; otherwise clean and sound. An uncommon Cruikshank item, with an impeccable provenance.
