(PHOTOGRAPHY – WOMEN)
[Max Glauer (1867-1935) photographer, studio of; Kathe Kollwitz]
KATHE KOLLWITZ SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH, CA. 1932: SELBSTBILD 65 JAHRIG [I.E.]
PORTRAIT AT AGE 65 OF KÄTHE KOLLWITZ].

Oppeln [Germany]. Konigl. Hof-Photograph[.er]. [1932]. Original full-bleed
silver print photograph, approximately 7 by 9 inches. Boldly signed and
darkly engrossed across the bottom. Photographer’s name and location
stamped in blind to lower right. Verso: small hand-stamp: “Printed in
Germany” and in pencil “Selbstbild 65 jahrig” with the Roman numeral IV
seen upper left. Near fine. Recently matted, per archival standards.

The noted master German Expressionist painter, printmaker, and sculptor
Kathe Kollwitz (1867–1945) created a body of work devoted to
self-portraiture, often seen in woodcuts and etchings.

Because her work was deemed subversive by the Nazi regime, Kollwitz was
forced to resign her position as the first female professor appointed to
the Prussian Academy. Shortly thereafter, Kollwitz was prohibited from
exhibiting her artwork.

This striking photograph was taken in the studio of German photographer Max
Glauer (1867–1935) in Oppeln, Germany.

Glauer was a Jew originally from Wroclaw who removed to Oppeln where his
photography quickly won the admiration of the German aristocracy. Under
King Wilhelm II, Glauer was appointed the royal court photographer. Glauer
photographed Nazis, most famously Paul von Hindenburg and Adolf Hitler.

Ironically, Glauer photographed Hitler, in 1933; one year after this
photograph was taken of Kollwitz.

Glauer hosted salons for the region’s artistic and intellectual cadre, and
presented art exhibitions in his home at Krakauerstrasse 34a.

Autographed photographs of Kathe Kollwitz are rare to commerce and her
autograph in this example is darkly engrossed and strong.
