Thomas Campbell: Gertrude of Wyoming; A Pennsylvanian Tale. And Other Poems. London: Printed by T. Bensley,… Published for the Author, by Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, 1809. FIRST EDITION. Large 4to (27.5 x 22.5 cm) in early/period polished calf decorated in blind and gilt, marbled page edges and endpapers; [4] + 134 pp.; with the tipped in slip. CBEL III p.183; Sabin 10268.

First edition of Campbell's immensely popular romantic epic inspired by an incident that occurred in Pennsylvania's Wyoming Valley during the American Revolutionary War, when more than 300 colonial soldiers and civilians were massacred by Loyalists and their Iroquois allies. This copy retains the rare inserted slip, tipped in at p. [3], defining the Gaelic word "Pelloch." Binding shows bumping/wear to the extremities, light rubbing to the spine; both joints cracked with the boards starting to loosen but still secured by the cords; contents with spotting to four leaves possibly due to an imperfection in the paper, some occasional light spotting and touches of soiling elsewhere, but generally clean and sharp. Loosely laid in is a typed letter (the envelope postmarked Nov. 1937) from Meda Cox of Rochester, New York, to Mr. J. C. Pearson of Cleveland, Ohio, containing genealogical musings and enclosing a photo postcard of the "Tablet and Holland Land Marker of Year 1798, Wyoming, N.Y."
