3) [JOSEPH ADDISON AND RICHARD STEELE], /THE SPECTATOR; with a
Biographical and Critical Preface, and Explanatory Notes / in Four
Volumes/. London, Routledge, Warne, et al, 1860. Complete four volume
set nicely bound in 3/4 leather. 12mo.
¶ "The Spectator" was a daily publication issued in London from 1711 to
1712 by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele. Each "paper" or "number" was
approximately 2,500 words long, and the original run of "The Spectator"
consisted of 555 numbers. In the first edition, these were collected
into seven volumes. The paper was revised, without the involment of
Steele, in 1714, appearing thrice weekly for six months, and these
papers when collected formed the eighth volume. (/Wikipedia/). It is
observed in the Preface in volume I of our offering that "Of all the
works that have been written in the English language, the series of
Essays under the title "The Spectator" has undoubtedly had the greatest
influence in reforming the manners, and correcting the vices of the
English people." The extremities of each volume are rubbed, and the
marbled paper of the boards shows some scuffing. Notwithstanding the
bindings are tight and the contents are exceptionally bright and
unmarked. The set, as a whole, looks quite pleasing on the shelf.

enlarged ninth edition, published in 1924, with an extensive
introduction by Theodore Watts-Dunton (not found in editions prior to
1916), and a biographical sketch of the author. J. R. Seavey provides
the illustrations. The front suede cover and spine have been tooled
(stamped?) with the title and the author's name, amidst a design of
arrows and feathers. Former owner's name to half title page. Contents
otherwise unmarked and exceptionally bright. Yapped edges of suede a bit
rolled.

5) LANE, EDWARD WILLIAM, /AN ACCOUNT OF THE MANNERS AND CUSTOMS OF THE
MODERN EGYPTIANS, written in Egypt during the years 1833, -34, and -35./
London, John Murray 1871, hb, black-&-white illustrations. Complete two
volume set handsomely bound in full polished calf. Small 8vo, pp. 386,
379. First published in 1836, this is the fifth edition, edited by
Edward Stanley Poole.
¶ Edward William Lane (1801-1876) was a British Orientalist, translator
and lexicographer best known for his translation of "One Thousand and
One Nights". He lived in Egypt for a number of years, often going about
in the habit of a Turk, and took extensive notes on the language, dress,
habits, and customs of the people amongst whom he lived. At the
suggestion of the famous London publisher, John Murray, he condensed his
notes into a single volume, published in 1836 by the Society for the
Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. The editor of this edition was the son of
Sophia Lane Poole, the author's brother. The boards of each volume bear
an armorial stamp, embossed in gilt, showing a bishop's mitre over a
book, lion rampant, two stars and 17 tiny devices. We can't identify the
crest, but it strongly suggests that this is a custom binding for a
bishop. The endpapers and foredges of the text block are marbled. The
spine is in compartments with five raised bands. There are two gilt
rules to the boards with corner florets. The leather is somewhat scuffed
at the extremities. Volume II has several tiny spots to the top right of
the front board. The hinges are tight and the contents are unmarked.
Overall, a most handsome little set.

6) PALLISER, MRS. BURY, /BRITTANY & ITS BYWAYS: Some Account of its
Inhabitants and its Antiquities; during a residence in that country/.
London, John Murray 1869, hb, black-&-white illustrations. Bound in full
red calf with marbled foredges and endpapers. 8vo, pp. 314.
¶ Fanny Bury Palliser (1805-1878) was an English writer on art, lace,
and travel. She was the daughter of Joseph Marryat, M.P. and the sister
of Frederick Marryat, the novelist. In 1832, she married Captain Richard
Bury Palliser. This is the first edition. It bears on the inside of the
front board the handsome armorial bookplate of William Dondeswell, of
Pull Court, in Worcestshire. Just above the bookplate, to the left, is a
small sticker indicating this volume came from the Pull Court Library.
Tabbed on to the last blank rear endpaper, is a very small Hudsons Bay
Company sticker. The contents are unmarked, if slightly age-toned. The
binding is rubbed, especially at the extremities, but the joints are
tight. Some scuffing to the leather.
$75.00
7) SCOTT, SIR WALTER, /HISTORY OF SCOTLAND in Two Volumes/. Paris, A.
and W. Galignani 1830, hb. Complete two volume set bound in half leather
over buckram. 12mo, pp. 426, 527.
¶ This title not to be confused with Scott's "Tales of a Grandfather",
which was a juvenile history of Scotland written shortly before he
embarked on the preparation of this more serious history of his native
country. The first edition was published in two volumes in 1829 (volume
I) and 1830 (volume II). This edition, published in Paris in 1830, is in
English, and contains the author's "Advertisment" dated November 1,
1829. It is most probably a pirated edition, as it appeared well before
the copyright laws put an end to such practices. Notwithstanding, the
Galignani brothers had paid Scott a royalty several years earlier for
the right to publish an English edition of his "Life of Napoleon". It is
almost certainly the first European edition of this work. The binding is
scuffed and rubbed, but still tight. Written inside the front boards is
a former owner's name and address (in Edinburgh). Another former owner
has rubber-stamped his name and address (Edinburgh, again) several times
to the front endpapers of both volumes. There are a few spots of foxing
in the text, which is otherwise remarkably clean and bright.

8) STEVENSON, ROBERT LOUIS / EDITED BY CHARLES CURTIS BIGELOW AND TEMPLE
SCOTT/. THE WORKS OF ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON / Edition de Luxe/. Boston,
MA, The Jefferson Press ND (c. 1908), hb. black-&-white illustrations.
Complete ten volume set handsomely bound in 3/4 leather. 8vo, Volume X
contains "A Life of Stevenson" by Sidney Colvin.
¶ Leather bound over marbled boards, with marbled endpapers. Each volume
shows light wear to binding, mainly limited to rubbing to the
extremities. Bindings uniformly tight and contents unmarked. Overall a
very good set. No date of publication given, but the frontispieces are
dated 1908.
$350.00
9) TURBERVILLE, A. S. E/NGLISH MEN AND MANNERS IN THE EIGHTEENTH
CENTURY./ Oxford, UK, The Clarendon Press 1929, 2nd edition, hb,
black-&-white illustrations. Beautifully bound in full tree calf
leather. 8vo, pp. xxiii,539.
¶ The spine is in compartments and quite elaborately decorated in gilt.
Armorial crest of Upper Canada College to front board, with the motto
"Palmam qui meruit ferat" ("let whoever earns the palm bear it"). Prize
bookplate inside front board dated October 23rd, 1931, "presented by The
Old Boys Association". Later ink inscription to front free endpaper.
Contents tightly-bound and in superb condition. Binding shows a touch of
rubbing to the extremities and one or two slight blemishes to the
leather. Altogether, a most attractive book.
$75.00
10) WILSON, JOHN MACKAY. /TALES OF THE BORDERS and of Scotland;
Historical, Traditionary, and Imaginative/. New York City, Johnson,
Wilson and Company ND, hb. Illustrated with steel engravings. Complete
five volume set bound in 3/4 dark green leather. 8vo, "A companion to
the Waverley Novels". Each volume has extra illustrated title page, with
steel engraved frontispiece.
¶ No date of publication given, but Wilson died in 1835, and the
frontispiece of him in volume I is taken from a portrait "in the
possession of his widow", so these volumes obviously printed after that
year - probably in the 1850s, judging by type face, binding style and
paper used. Bindings show some rubbing, especially to extremities. Final
volume contains extensive glossary. Foredges marbled. Text is
double-columned. Contents unmarked and hinges tight. A good, to good
plus, set. The price is for all five volumes.
