Goheen, Robert and Margaret. TRAIN TRIP TO RAJASTAN: AMBASSADOR GOHEEN AND
PARTY, October 19-26, 1979. Original archive. This small archive contains:
two drafts of a Tentative Itinerary, dated 26 September (4pp) and 17
October 1979 (8pp), one heavily annotated in ink, plus the final itinerary
(7pp); instructions for the train trip (Bogie, Attendent, Meals, Rooms,
etc.); typewritten and handwritten cards listing supplies (thermoses, large
cooler, Sanka, dried beef, Beefaroni, flashlight, bug spray, 2 stools, 4
cushions, no blankets, etc.); schedule of meals to be eaten enroute;
correspondence from staff and officials re booking and program for the trip
by private rail car; hand-drawn layout of the rail car (sleeping
accommodations, kitchen, baths, etc.); biographical sketches of Dr. Karni
Singh, Maharaja of Bikaner, and Rajmata Gayatri Devi of Jaipur; engraved
luncheon invitation from H.H. Maharaja Sawai Bhawani Singh of Jaipur on his
gilt-embossed stationery, addressed to Their Excellencies Dr. & Mrs. Robert
F. Goheen, Rambagh, Jaipur, noting in part, "Dress Informal--Bush Shirt,"
with printed instructions for Entrance to the City Palace via Tripolia
Gate. The materials exhibit a few marks from rusted paperclips. All are
housed in a brown folder, labeled "Mrs. Goheen," with a hand-lettered title
on the front. Good .
[Dr. Goheen (1919-2008) served as President of Princeton University from
1957 to 1972, and US Ambassador to India, 1977-1980, accompanied by his
wife, Margaret.] $75.00
