New Jersey, Margate. GROUP OF SEVEN VERNACULAR PHOTOGRAPHS, RECORDING A
1915 TRIP TO VISIT "LUCY THE ELEPHANT" AT MARGATE, NEW JERSEY. Original
photographs. The seven sepiatone images are about 2.75" x 4.5". All are
dated in ink, May 9, 1915. The first, a full side-view of Lucy, is
captioned in ink: "Excursion to White Elephant Hotel, equipped with
furniture from abandoned sea pirate." The other photos include a front view
of Lucy with a couple in the foreground, the man and woman outside a
bath-house on the beach, etc. All photos have scrapbook residue on the
versos. Good .
Lucy the Elephant, a six-story example of novelty architecture, was built
of wood and tin sheeting in 1881 by James V. Lafferty at Margate, New
Jersey, as a real-estate promotion gimick. Today, visitors still explore
Lucy via a spiral staircase inside her left rear leg, which leads up into
the interior and a gift shop, then up again to the howdah for views of the
Atlantic City skyline. $50.00
