Six-page ALS of April 24, 1901, partly cross-written, from the sister of
Ulysses S. Grant: Mary Frances [Grant] Cramer to Charles E. Rice of
Alliance, Ohio. She comments on a parlor talk; observation of a picture he
sent ³the value of which is enhanced in my estimation by the spinning wheel;
³I know little about my Grandmother Grant and how her father was ³taken into
the Todd family² and further comments on her father¹s birth, trade and
education; her daughter who ³breathed her last, over six years ago, in the
bed of which I sent you a splinter²; a lengthy story about her ³historical
tooth² and how it remained loose until ³near the close of our diplomatic
life in Copenhagen² and how she borrowed a book on dentistry and discovered
its ancient origin and how her composition on this was read at a lyceum and
they voted to make her a member of their society and she goes on to say that
at the Paris Exposition she was introduced to the dentist of Emperor
Napoleon; further discusses her son, a teacher at the DeWitt Clinton School
of New York which he prefers over Lehigh University; and sundry other
